A Prayer to St. John the Baptist, for Grace
Holy and illustrious John the Baptist, chosen friend of Jesus Christ, faithful herald of God, welcome forerunner of the Lord, standard-bearer of the martyrs, greatest among the sons of men, how can I adequately honor and glorify thee? For so great is thy wealth of grave that thy glory outshines that of all the saints. Be mindful of me, I beseech thee, and by thy prayers obtain pardon of the Supreme Judge for my sins. Plant in my heart the seeds of virtue, so that, free from son, I may be worthy to be filled with the grace of the Holy Ghost; and when the battle of life is ended may I. By thy help, come to the gate of endless bliss. Amen.

O glorious Saint John the Baptist, greatest prophet among those born from woman, although thou wast sanctified in thy mother’s womb and didst lead a most innocent life, nevertheless it was thy will to retire into the wilderness, there to devote thyself to the practice of austerity and penance; obtain for us of thy Lord the grace to be wholly detached, at least in our hearts, from earthly goods, and to practice Christian mortification with interior recollection and with the spirit of holy prayer. Amen.

O Savior Jesus, as Zechariah, the father of Saint John the Baptist, was ministering in the temple, an angel brought him news that his elderly wife Elizabeth would bear a child and that this boy would be filled with the Holy Spirit. But Zechariah doubted, and because of this was struck dumb until John's birth. I ask Saint John to pray for me when I doubt, that my own hesitancy to believe in You will be converted into strong faith and true conviction. Help me to learn from Your promises that I can always trust in You. Lord Jesus, I do believe; help my unbelief. Saint John the Baptist, pray for me. Amen.

O Divine Savior, Saint John was zealous in his preaching about the need to repent because he wanted everyone to be reconciled with You. So strong was his conviction that he could not keep silent, even when he knew his honesty came with a cost. I ask him to intercede for me as I identify the sins in my world. Help me to speak up when You want me to get involved-in the pro-life movement, in helping our society elect holy men to political office, in challenging others to let go of their attachments to money and possessions for the sake of the needy, and in fighting evil wherever it abounds. Saint John, pray for me. Amen.
